We had a really wonderful visit with my parents-in-law over the past week. The weather couldn't have been lovelier. It was colder at night than it's been. Each morning we had a clear sky and a thick frost. Afternoons in the high 50s and low 60s. It was a treat for the Bostonians and for us as well.
I've mentioned a couple of times that I've been in a funk lately. While I was baking like crazy last Wednesday, eagerly awaiting our guests, we had a visitation. Matt picked up a glass from the butcher block and-- There's a message there somewhere. At the very least, it's:
Hydrate, and you'll be happier.
And oh did we have a happy time! Matt's parents left this morning and all day I've felt a little worn out. Worn out from the energy it takes to remember we'll see them again soon. Worn out from simply not sleeping much. And worn out with our big girl's antics. Lord! She's so precocious, she's already two. We are experiencing extreme separation anxiety at the moment. It reminds me of that dog we had who would sit outside the bathroom while my mom was inside and cry. To top it all off, we've slowly begun to wean over the last couple of weeks. Not to put too fine a point on it--it sucks, for everyone. I'll go into that another time. Anyway, I'm wiped so I'll just share the photos of the past week with you slideshow style, starting with the pre-arrival baking and ending with a last G+T at sunset.
Of particular note: the birthday was my mom-in-law's; everything I baked came out of the pan without damage...only I burnt half the cookies (the ebony and the ivory, my husband said); the park is Millersylvania, the restaurant is La Tarasca, and there's a daffodil blooming in our side yard!
Missing our friends and family tonight.
