So, on the 19th of this month I wrote, "I hope to get back on track, and post here every day." Right. I did very much hope so but clearly didn't do it. But, I have been very busy, even busier than usual. Besides the housewife stuff, and the babysitting my nephew stuff, I have been making prototypes for my business. Yes. I am starting a business, though cottage industry is really a more appropriate term. The plan is to work as a dollmaker something like half time, and probably--hopefully!--making something like quarter time money. But with deep satisfaction making up the remainder of the pay. We shall see. Anyhow, I will be making the dolls known as Waldorf or Steiner dolls, and will have lots more to say about them. In the meantime, the following slideshow of the past week + features glimpses of my first attempt. Yes--I decided to start a business making something I have never made before. Am I crazy? I don't care anymore. It's going great but taking up all the free time I'm not spending staring dazedly into my gin and tonic after last nap and before dinner. Speaking of gin, we are also weaning quite seriously now. My goal is to be nursing only at night by the end of the month. Because I've been such a diehard, this-is-the-best-thing-ever kind of nurser, you may (if you know me) wonder why I am stopping now. The answer is because my body has changed. It's not a nursing body anymore, and nursing is causing stress and duress. I still love it, but I also feel impatient now. I just know it's time to quit.
Anyway, the following photos are in chronological order since my last post. Captions follow, even if they don't look that way. One thing I HATE about TypePad is how hard this can be to format. Here goes.
Wood being delivered--note Hickory the cat on dash.
Let the dollmaking begin. Pictured is Naked Hippy Doll, who planted the seed of inspiration.
Waldorf doll head form, wool in cotton stockinette tube, shaped with perle thread.
First doll head, from form above. I hated it.
Onset of anxiety by early doll head failure assuaged by Oatmeal Chocolate Raisin cookies.
We're pros now--Matt stacked the whole cord before the day was over, while still sick.
Doll body with first and second attempt at head. Head still resembling block, but better.
Finally, head success. Decent schnoz. I like a big nose. Placing pins for features--I think of it as the voodoo stage.
A warm day and a new dress.
Ahem ahem! NOW we're getting somewhere! Embroidered eyes, mouth freckles. Dug crochet knowledge from dusty corner of the mind and knit bouclé wig cap. So pleased I nearly made first doll a boy, or a hip girl, but I needed to know how to complete the wig. Also need to take better pictures. Almost all doll pictures taken at night.
Making a helmet for Ralph. Incidentally, if you give a mouse a "crash helmet," then he'll want a "BMX suit, with knee pads, and shoulder pads, and a chest pad, and um....um, elbow pads, and KNEE pads and..." A sweater, some shirts, and a blanket are planned for Ralph's owner's birthday. Maaaaaybe even a BMX suit. Maybe.
My doll with completed wig and unblocked sweater. I knit this from waldorfmama's free pattern. I know I can't sell it, of course, but it gave me some much needed practice and information so I can come up with my own pattern. I'd like to sell some dolls with sweaters. ......I'm sorry, but I just have to say I think her hair looks badass. I know that's not necessarily appropriate for a children's doll, but I can't help it.
Well that has us caught up to today. For some reason I can't get any more photos to upload and I can't sit here chattering all night, because I'm hard at work on some garment patterns. I don't really know anything about pattern drafting....or knitting, crocheting, or dollmaking. But hey, it seems to be working out anyway! And I am having so much fun. I really can't express how satisfying this new venture has been so far. But I have a lot to do. One thing I need is a name, and I'm having a hard time committing to anything. If you have any ideas, please share! For those who have shared ideas already, thank you ever so much. They are percolating.
Until tomorrow then! I hope to have more to show you soon...
